M-25 Bridge Replacement

  • Location: Sanilac County, Michigan
  • Construction Value: $2.6M
  • Client: Michigan Department of Transportation

Project Description:

ROWE completed construction engineering for the removal and replacement of the M-25 bridge over Mill Creek in Sanilac County. The bridge was replaced with prestressed concrete box beam and precast deck that were constructed offsite, then delivered to the project site. This allowed construction at the site to begin much later in the summer than if the beams and deck were constructed onsite. It also shortened the bridge’s closure to traffic by at least one week. Local businesses that rely on revenue generated by the many tourists that use the bridge in the summer appreciated the technique that minimized travel impediments. The travel route is also used by many people with vacation homes in the area, who wanted to get to their relaxation destinations as quickly as possible.

The project included:

  • Scour countermeasures
  • Relocating the adjacent water main to accommodate the increased width of the bridge
  • Approach work

Shoulders on the new bridge are five feet wider than the old bridge, increasing safety. The Lansing-Jackson Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers-Michigan Section awarded the project a 2017 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award.
