Genesee County’s First Roundabout
- Location: Gaines & Mundy Townships, Michigan
- Construction Value: $680K
- Client: Genesee County Road Commission
Project Description:
ROWE provided both design and construction engineering services for this project to replace stop signs and a flasher on Elms Road with a roundabout, which is the first roundabout on a public roadway within Genesee County. The project was 0.3 mile in length, received Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funding, and included removal of all existing pavement.
The project included new:
- Aggregate base
- Storm sewer
- Curb and gutter
- Concrete pavement
- Hot-mix asphalt approaches
- Signs
- Pavement markings
During design, ROWE coordinated with local farmers and truckers within the area to make sure the proposed roadway would accommodate the large equipment that would need to traverse through the intersection. ROWE also assisted with obtaining grading easements for the project. The configuration is expected to decrease the number of accidents at this location, which included 10 crashes in the previous four years – resulting in three injuries and one fatality.
